With each passing day, it seems that the metaverse is being integrated with more and more features and functionalities. The virtual ecosystem is undoubtedly expanding and becoming more cherished, and a lot of people look forward to becoming a part of an unending digital environment. However, as the metaverse grows all around us, it’s become even more important to ask ourselves, “Is the metaverse as good as the real world, or is it even better than reality?”

You see, there’s no point to the whole “enhanced future” promised by this virtual environment if it fails to deliver intentional programming for maintaining and possibly expanding our relationships. If so, the metaverse is going to lack an important aspect of our lives — connection.

It’s important to understand that many studies and research reinforce the fact that people are healthier and happier and can extend their life spans if they have good relationships with their friends, family, and the people around them. Research also indicated that being lonely can shrink our ability to empathize, add to our stress levels, and can harm our mental health.

In light of this, we’re going to talk about how the metaverse is going to help us become better at socializing and nurturing friendships and relationships beyond borders.

The Primary Currency of the Metaverse Revolves Around Being Social

This is true because using the virtual ecosystem will mean having to engage and interact with thousands of other people, forging environments, exploring structures, etc. Think about it. From a business perspective, what use is branding or marketing if there is no human connection involved?

Big companies and brands see the metaverse as an instrumental tool for bringing people together, allowing them to build long-lasting relationships and, eventually, a diverse and multilingual community of people from across the globe. Moreover, according to a statistical analysis by Accenture, it was identified that 84% of gamers use a variety of gaming platforms as a necessary facet to socialize and nurture new friendships.

Popular and mainstream video games such as Call of Duty provide a powerful social factor that helps players sustain casual relationships and friendships for a longer period compared to games that don’t come with a social incentive. In addition, video games that can forge digital communities on a variety of platforms can last for a very long period of time.

Your Brain in a Virtual Ecosystem

Science Translated provides a pretty in-depth and interesting take on the metaverse as a social platform. They asked, “why is virtual reality so captivating and exciting to people?”. This question was asked to the assistant director of Robot Consortium, Dr. Justin Hart, who aptly responded that virtual reality has the capability of offering users an even deeper connection and sense of building relationships.

That’s because VR allows users to experience everything together without any interruption or consequence. For example, right now, you can only imagine taking a cycling tour on Jupiter. However, on the metaverse, VR is going to take you one step closer to your imagination, allowing you to take trips on Jupiter, providing an incredibly immersive, fascinating, and powerful experience.

So even though we’re represented on the metaverse as unique avatars, there isn’t going to be a major difference between how we make connections and establish relationships in a virtual environment compared to doing the same in the real world. Quite fascinating. Virtual reality avatars and characters are no less compelling and socially fulfilling than connecting with some on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

The Socializing Power of Virtual Worlds

Using the metaverse will also change our perspectives in terms of how we socialize with other people. And no, this doesn’t only apply to how you interact with your family or friends. You see, once you’re in a digital world, you’ll have access to an incredibly vast environment, meaning that you will have the opportunity to come across people from all walks of life, destinations, backgrounds, etc. The internet will essentially function as a teleportation bridge, linking you with friends who are, otherwise, thousands and thousands of miles away from you.

How about attending a concert or an important meeting? No problem. How about dancing or hanging out with people from different countries? No problem. The metaverse is going to completely shrink the distance factor, increasing your power to connect endlessly. You’d be surprised to know that Abba is organizing a virtual concert on the metaverse. Users will be able to interact with the musicians, dance to their tunes, and enjoy the show as if they would in the real world.

Forming New Types of Relationships

The metaverse is also an excellent platform for connecting and starting new types of relationships. Experts suggest that total strangers will be able to go on blind double dates, making the dating scene more inclusive, fun, and seamless. Why? Well, that’s because you won’t have to worry about the “distance” factor. Plus, the couple will not be required to stay in close proximity to date.

While the romance in the metaverse is off the charts, there are also other types of interactions encouraged by the virtual ecosystem. More users are now inclined towards virtual reality headsets as well as other VR tech to not just maintain their relationships with long-distance friends or significant others, but they’re starting to digitally immortalize relatives and friends who have long since passed on from the world. Yes. Believe it or not, technology companies are working on developing AI and VR software that will soon connect you with your deceased loved one in the metaverse.

Bottom Line

But perhaps an even more important question that we should ask ourselves is, “are we truly prepared to fuse our “real” selves with our “virtual” selves?”. Only time will tell. But as virtual reality technology and avatars inch close to seeming more real than ever, the experience may just be a bit weird for us.
